Multifunctional culture center will be built in Varna

  May 26th, 2009

Bulgaria Gazzette, 24th May, 2009

varna002780144696.jpg

Varna will have a multifunctional culture center before 2019, when the city is expected to become the European capital of culture. The news was announced by the chairman of the Municipality council Borislav Gutsanov.

The new art center will replace the old harbour Varna-east and will be the analogue of the Australian Sidney Opera, said Gutsanov. Still, the project will not copy the architecture of one of the symbols of Australia. The concert hall is the key point of the make-over of the harbour complex into an attractive, culture center.

To complete the project, the municipality will announce an international competition, which will likely attract prominent architects from all over the world. The lack of a proper-size modern concert hall that is suitable for spectacles and music performances of various ranges is one of the serious problems for the people of art in Varna. It is also a major stopper of visits of foreign artists.

Port in a storm

Kerin Hope, FT’s Athens correspondent, January 17 2009

Archaeologist Teo Rokov watches intently as a mechanical digger raises a bucket of soil from a building site in Varna’s Gratska Mahala, or Greek Quarter (where the offices of Eurolink Investment Group are located). Mixed in with the earth, he spots fragments of medieval pottery. “This is plain old household stuff but you never know,” he says. “We track every construction project in this neighbourhood. If something important comes up, the developer covers the cost of a full-scale excavation.”

The scene is indicative of life in Bulgaria’s largest Black Sea port, which was settled two-and-a-half millennia ago by colonists from Miletus, a Greek city on the Asia Minor coast and is now, as the country’s second fastest growing city, coping with a big influx of new residents.

Originally, and for centuries under Greek, Roman and Turkish rule, Varna was a hub for traders shipping salted fish, grain, furs and gold to the Mediterranean and beyond. By the early 1900s Armenians, Jews and Bulgarians had joined Greek merchants and many took part in a grand urban revival of the city, launched by King Ferdinand. New mansions designed by Italian architects were painted in pastel colours appropriate to a fashionable European resort with a pier, wooden bathing huts and a Sea Garden (a stretch of parkland planted with rare trees under the supervision of a renowned Czech botanist and landscaper).

New Varna will be on the South of the Varna Sea Lake

  October 17th, 2008

The neighbourhood of Galata and the villages of Konstantinovo and Zvezditsa will have another 60 000 people, mainly young families, living in the area within the next 10 years. The region will become an attractive place for living. In some projects after the Asparuhov Bridge, prices reach € 1800-2000 per sq.m., said the Chairman of ‘Eurolink Investment Group’, Mr. Christopher Violaris. The main themes discussed at the ‘Eagle Has Landed’ conference were the challenges before the market of real estate, the New General Town Plan and the above mentioned areas, as well as the 2 golf courses, Royal Oakwood and Aphrodite Hills.

According to Mr. Violaris, Varna, as it is today, will be referred to as the old city and the new one will be located on the other side of the lake, with a modern centre and good infrastructure. Investors from Europe, Malta, Cyprus and South Africa showed interest towards those regions. This is one of the reasons why family homes and residential complexes will be an alternative to the panel apartments.

After the approval of the New General Town Plan, near the village of Konstantinovo, over an area of 600 decares of land, an Ethnographic village will be built and it will be similar to the one near the town of Gabrovo, ‘Etara’ (http://www.etar.org/index-en.htm), is what Eurolink Investment Group announced.

Varna’s Beverly Hills is being planned in the region beyond the Varna Sea lake. The villages of Konstantinovo, Zvezditsa and the quarter of Galata will become the most attractive places to live, brokers predicted at a seminar devoted to land investments. In some projects across the Asparuhov bridge prices will reach € 1800 - 2000 per square meter, said the Chairman of Eurolink Investment Group, Mr. Christopher Violaris. Between 40 thousand and 60 thousand people are going to settle in the region over the next ten years, revealed Alexander Nikolov, Deputy MD of the company. His calculations were based on the prognosis in the draft of the General Town Plan (GTP) of Varna.

A new neighbourhood is planned for the South West part of the Sea Capital of Bulgaria, Varna

  October 17th, 2008

13th Oct, 2008, by Doroteia Stoyanova, “Construction - Properties” daily

ezero-varna1.jpgezero-varna2.jpg

A new luxurious residential complex is to be developed to the South West of Varna. The investment projects are of the company Eurolink Investment Group, owner of 13 000 decares of land in the area of the village of Konstantinovo. According to Mr. Violaris, Chairman of the company, the new neighborhood will consist of 3-floor family houses. “This is a long-term project, which will be finalized within the next 10 years”, commented Mr. Violaris. He advised that during the construction of the complex, the nature in the region will be preserved to the maximum, which will turn the area into an attractive residential spot. The prognosis, provided in the General Town Plan of Varna, show that during the next 10 years another 40 000 to 60 000 people will populate the area.

According to Mr. Violaris, the World’s financial crisis will not affect the Real Estate Market in Bulgaria. “Citizens from Denmark, Malta, Great Britain and even South Africa are interested in living and working here. However, up to now their interest was toward holiday homes, while in future more demand will be directed towards residential buildings, especially family houses”, said Mr. Violaris

Construction work on the luxurious residential neighborhood will start right after the approval of the General Town Plan of Varna. This is expected to happen not later than March, 2009. At present, negotiations for the construction of a marina are carried out with a specialized company, revealed Mr. Violaris. The first stage of the realization of the project is expected to finalize within the next 3-4 years.

According to the preliminary assignment of the General Town Plan of Varna, the area to the South and South West of Varna is expected to turn into a satellite village. The residential zone will include all housing areas of Zvezditsa nad Konstantinovo, as well as the new agricultural terrains. There is also another idea of having a secondary centre with administrative buildings, techno-park, church, university, sports playground, etc.

Three new “Centers” and three Bus Stations are going to be constructed in Varna

  August 4th, 2008

varna_googlemaps.jpg

The creation of three secondary Town Centers is one of the ideas in the preliminary draft of the General Development Town Plan of Varna. Not only such will appear in the well known largo (town center), but also in Borovets, Vinnitsa and the residential quarter “Vladislav Varnenchik”. This became clear in the presentation of the preliminary draft of the General Development Plan of Varna, reported moreto.net.

The concept of the project consists of reconstruction and modernization of the present infrastructure, complex urbanization of new territories/areas, situated in the outskirts of the city, the expansion of the resident areas north-east towards St.Nikola and Gorna Traka neighborhoods, south-east to Borovets and Rakitnika. Provisions have been made for further extension of the central city area to the south and southwest, explained the Project Team Leader Prof. Ivan Nikiforov.

The creation of the three new Centers is only a small part of the surprises. The General Development Plan outlines an expansion of the industrial area to the north-west coast of the lake to the village of Topoli. Thus the industrial area will be connected to the container port, to be built in future. Except the present Bus Station, three new coach stations are going to be revealed. They will be located respectively in the residential quarter Kaisieva Gradina and Alexander Dyakovich Str.

As per the preliminary General Development Plan, the Sea Gardens will have competition by the expansion of the Nature Park in Asparuhovo to Cape Galata. An ethnographic park is going to be created in the area of the village of Konstantinovo, region of Elenitsa, which is the property of Eurolink Investment Group. The village which is expected to be a tourist’s magnet, will consist of traditional houses built in accordance to the rational Bulgarian Architecture, workshops for craftsmen and artists, three village squares around artificial lakes with coffee shops and Mechanas (taverns) and a Roman style Amphitheater for Spring and Summer Festivals.

The General Development Plan was developed by the Territorial designers’ bureau in Varna and the National Center for territorial development. The project is going to be reviewed at a meeting of the Municipal Council in the end of August. When adopted, it will be immediately presented to the National Town-planning Council of Experts for final approval. It is expected to go into practical introduction in early 2009.

The city of Varna - Drama Theatre “Stoyan Bachvarov”

  June 6th, 2008

The idea for a new and modern theatre building in Varna dates from the beginning of the XX century. It is associated with the formation of a professional theatrical company, requiring an appropriate building. The old “Union” hall no longer suited the growing cultural need of the city. In 1909 at the first municipality meeting the new mayor Ivan Tserov, a cultural and educational activist, brought the subject of a new building. The councilors agreed and determined the future location - the south corner of the city garden, between the Clock Tower and the Mahmud fountain, facing the square.

opera11.jpg

The famous architect Nicola Lazarov won the competition for the project of the new theatre building. He is also author of Radio Varna building and the National Theatre “Ivan Vasov”. The building had the interior design of the theatre in Sofia - a 1000 seats capacity, divided in stalls and 2 balconies. On March 26th 1912, “the second day of Easter, the base stone of the city theatre was laid in grandeur…” In the presence of the Varna society the mayor Tserov held a rousing speech. It is followed by the officials and Lazarov signing formal documents and building it in a special stone case. Different Bulgarian coins were also laid in the base.

City of VARNA and the region – Aladzha Monastery

  May 8th, 2008

aladzha1.jpg

The name of Aladzha monastery comes from the Turkish word for colourful (”aladzha”) due most probably to the bright colours of its wall paintings, dating back to the early Middle Ages. The monk’s cells, common rooms and sanctuaries, dug directly into the limestone rock and situated on two levels high above the ground, were connected via an external staircase. The lower floor hosted the monks’ private cells, common rooms (i.e. kitchen, dining room) and a small church, while the upper level was dedicated entirely to a chapel. According to some historians, primitive monks’ cells were built and inhabited already in the 4th century AC. The entire monastery is considered to date back to the 12th century AC. Unfortunately, nowadays only few of the frescoes are preserved (most of these to be found in the chapel) but the experience of visiting a monastery dug high above the ground into a steep rock is unforgettable. The monastery is declared a cultural sight and houses a small museum. Less than a kilometer away from the Aladzha Monastery, you can find a similar monastery complex, called Katakombite (The Catacombs). Katakombite has an origin and history similar to those of the Aladzha Monastery, though its remains are far less preserved.

aladzha2.jpg

The Aladzha monastery is not a functioning cloister and does not offer accommodation or food. Nevertheless, there is a rich choice of such facilities in the nearby resorts of Golden Sands and St. Konstantin and Elena

The Aladzha rock monastery can be reached easily from Varna and Golden Sands by car or bus with the distance from the bus stop being only a five-minute walk.

City of VARNA and the region – THE STONE FOREST

  April 3rd, 2008

image021.jpg

The Stone Forest is a fabulous natural phenomena most known with its Bulgarian name “Pobitite Kamani”, which means “stones beaten into the ground”, a name completely corresponding to the reality. These are numerous limestone pillars as high as 10 m, hollow or solid cylinders, truncated cones, different bulgings and single rocks and cliffs.
Nowadays is believed that these carbonate-cemented sandstone structures were formed due to microbial methane oxidation around natural gas seepages - so called “bubbling reefs”. The cementation occurred in the subbottom marine sands some 50 million years ago and now are exposed by subsecuent erosion of the surrounding unconsolidated sediments and vertical tectonic movements of the earth crust.

City of VARNA – The Sea-Side Park

  March 10th, 2008

1.jpg This is the largest park in Varna city. The planting of the park started in 1878. Since then it is continuously decorated and restored. The Seaside Garden will always be associated with the name of the Czech Antonin Novak - a park designer specialized in the Vienna castles of Schoenbrunn and Belvedere. The Seaside Garden became also known as the most beautiful park on the Balkan Peninsula. It was not only a nature reserve, but also a recreational place for the citizens. The first cafeteria was placed on piles and covered with straw, a fountain spring was also built. In 1906 the foundations of one of the city’s most famous sights were laid. The building of the Aquarium (Marine Biological Station) finished in 1911 but it was adapted for the needs of the Naval Engineering School and later on - of the Fishery School. It was not until 17 September 1932 that the Aquarium was open for visitors. A Black Sea relief was modeled in front of it.

The park separates Varna from the beach and goes all along the city

Close by, the first Open Theatre was built in 1920 and between 1926 and 1939 it hosted the Varna Musical Celebrations, forerunner of the present Varna Summer Festival. The nowadays-existing Open Theatre was built in 1960-1961.

The decision to declare Varna as a resort centre had a beneficial influence on its development. Wooden stands appeared in the Sea Park where music was played on holidays, children’s area with swings was formed, and a tennis court was allotted to the Varna tennis club. The opening of the new sea baths brought about improvements in the beach zone.

City of VARNA - The City Clock-Tower

  February 1st, 2008

image0111.jpg

In 1775 the Frenchman Chevalier visited Varna and described it as follows: “There are approximately 16000 citizens, 12 mosques, 2 churches and 1 bell-tower built 20 years ago, on top of which a clock with a bell can be seen…” From these diaries it becomes obvious that even back in mid XVIII century there had been a city clock in Varna. That clock tower was located in the green grounds behind the present theatre and it was also used by firemen as their watchtower. How did the tower look like, was it made of wood or stones? We don’t know. As we also don’t know when exactly it had been destroyed. It could have happened in the years of the 1828 siege of the city or in the fierce fire in Varna during the Crimean War.

The idea to re-build an impressive city clock tower was accomplished in 1888 at the time when Krastyu Mirski was mayor of Varna. Varna municipality assigned to architect Sava Dimitrievich the project of a stone fire tower with a clock that should be 24 meters high. The construction site was carefully chosen - the new clock tower in the city park and the Assumption Cathedral formed the city centre boundaries of those times. The same year Concordia theatre hall burned down and another hall for meetings and theatre plays was planned to be built close by the tower.

In two years’ time the new clock tower and Saedinenie (Union) Hall were ready and officially opened to visitors. Firemen used the tower since high buildings were still rare and from top of it they could watch over the entire city. At daytime they used coloured flags to signalize for fire and at night signals were exchanged by lit lanterns. Those fire prevention activities stopped in 1898, when the fire brigade was equipped with a telephone line. The clockwork was purchased from England and the prominent revolutionary Oton Ivanov fixed it on the tower.

Though it remains unrevealed to people’s glances, the clockwork itself is a real masterpiece. It is quite strange that contrary to traditions the name of the producing company was not inscribed on it. The whole system is fitted in a big wooden “box” reached by a narrow winding staircase along the stone walls. The dial-plate in front is used to control the pace of the clock, as well as to correct it. Each fourth second a system of axles and gears transmits the motion to the clock hands on the tower outside. Instead of springs used in contemporary clocks, this clockwork mechanism is driven by weights suspended in the middle of the tower. The winding up is performed by the help of a simple crank arm of a huge drum besides the main group of gear wheels, which winds the string with the hanging weights. Another axle transmits the motion to the bell knocker at the tower top. Till 1930 the bell had been measuring hours two times within an interval of one minute.

Restaurant of the month - Le Baron Salad Saloon Restauran

  February 1st, 2008

13/1/08, by Richard Payne

baron.jpg

I had a wonderful festive Xmas and New Year with my friend in Sofia, Varna and my family in UK, which consequently lead to too many festive dinners, Xmas pudding and chocolates. With this behind us, it is time for a dreaded diet session.

On the last day in Sofia I had a meal in a restaurant with my good friend. He refused to believe I can diet to a target weight, so I wrote it down on a 50 Lev note and gave it to him. If I fail to achieve the target weight before next Xmas, he can keep it. This meant I had to keep away from nice restaurants around Varna until I discovered the Le Bacon Restaurant.

Le Bacon Salad Saloon is a new restaurant, recently opened, just before Xmas. As the picture shows: a stylish modern restaurant with comfortable atmosphere and large window facing. It is behind the blue tourist information office on a street which you can’t miss because it has a very attractive red light show outside.

While the menu is in Bulgarian, it offers a very wide selection of salads (about 40 of them) at a reasonable price. It includes pizza and pasta as well. My good friend ordered a pizza while I ordered a custom salad (chicken, bacon, cheese, etc). Taking a great care of my diet, I tried out his pizza slice and yum! yum!…it was most excellent! I was generally surprised how much I enjoyed the well presented fresh salad dish. The menu offers choices of roughly 50 different add-on bits which makes up custom salads of your desire. The wine and drink selection is comprehensive. I had a discussion with the restaurant’s friendly supervisor who promised to provide English menus in a few weeks time.

If you’re bored with the Happy restaurants or other fast food chains, I would certainly recommend this place as it offers much more choices. They’re of good value due to a balanced combination of presentation, price and low energy healthy food, which gives your diet a better chance to succeed!
